Recently there have been a lot of headlines concerning data and privacy laws in the United States. The latest to hit the headlines is a new law that is going into effect soon in Europe called GDPR.
On April 14, 2015, European Union(EU) Parliament finally approved (this took four years to approve) a new regulation on data privacy called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The enforcement date was set for May 25, 2018, which is right around the corner. This law was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower their citizens’ data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy. Currently the United States does not have a similar law.
Ultimately what does it mean for consumers? They will basically see more privacy warnings and consent requests on websites that collect data.
